S.T.E.M and Literacy

One of the unique features of our preschool program is our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and our Literacy class. We have phenomenal teachers who have put intentional effort into creating a curriculum for each of these classes that allow children to dive deeper into subject matter and explore exciting topics within STEM and Literacy. We are proud to make these options available as a part of your child’s early learning experience!

S.T.E.M

Taking the age of our students into consideration the program is heavy on science, but technology, engineering, and math are also included. Each day there is a specific topic covered and explored through hands-on learning. Doing experiments, reading books, bible stories, playing games, and doing crafts all contribute to the learning in STEM class. The children keep a science notebook where they keep track of the science terms and methods they use while doing the experiments. Being exposed to STEM early on in life will help build foundational skills and hopefully a lifelong love of learning.

 Our curriculum includes:

  • What is STEM? Scientific method, sinking and floating, Life cycle of apples and pumpkins, leaves, seasons, weather
  • Levers catapults, bridges, marshmallow structures, inclined plane, simple machines
  • Chemical reactions, volcanoes, light.color, sound, electricity, static electricity, space/ astronomy, rockets, and air
  • Estimation, Peep science, Butterflies, Solar Energy

LITERACY

In each quarter, Mrs. Walter works on beginning stages of writing phonemic awareness, early print concepts, syllables, and will begin to take a look at basic sight words. Through our program our children will be able to practice early reading skills. Once we learn to read, we can read to learn. Students will learn about character development, cause and effect, plot, setting, sequencing, retelling and comparison. Children are naturally excited about the world around them. Exposing children to non fiction texts helps children to learn about their world through literature, teaching them about feature captions, facts, photography, graphs, labels and titles. Children will get the opportunity to dive deep into author studies to learn about the writing and illustration processes. They will even get the opportunity to meet local authors and interact with them and their books! Exposing students to early literacy will help them to lay a positive foundation in their reading journeys that will benefit them for the rest of their lives!

The literacy curriculum focuses on four main categories;

  • Rhyming through various texts
  • Fairy Tales and Folktales
  • Fiction vs. on-fiction texts
  • Author study
